Earth Day 2020: Celebrate the 50th Anniversary Digitally

Due to COVID-19, most campus operations are on hold. This year we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, so this isn’t a time to forget about economic, social, and environmental justice. This trying time has formed new partnerships and collaborations in so many ways, Earth Day advocates are no different. Here are a list of many events being held and sponsored by a myriad of different organizations. We thank them all for their contributions in the past, present, and future.

Monday

  1. DIY Gardening Workshop

    • Stuck at home with time to spare? Join us live to learn how to start your own DIY garden from your own backyard!  
  2. Virtual Wetland Tour

    • Let us take you on a virtual tour of UW-Bothell’s wetland while we describe its rich history and ecology.  

Tuesday

  1. UW Recycling Trash Talk

    • Join UW Recycling for a video watch party and Q&A opportunity on proper recycling and composting practices at UW and at home in the Seattle area. 
  2. Healthy, Sustainable Menstrual Cycle Talk
    • Time: 1:00-2:00pm  
    • Zoom Call 
    • Learn about options for having a healthier, more sustainable (and cheaper!) period! Ask those tricky questions that you are nervous about, and squash your fears around changing your routine. 

Wednesday

    • From April 22, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, to April 24, activists, performers, thought leaders and artists will come together for an empowering, inspiring, and communal three day livestream mobilization. The fight against the coronavirus and the climate crisis go hand-in-hand, and as we work to flatten the curve of this pandemic, we must strive toward the longer term goal of building a society rooted in sustainability and justice.
  2. Earth Talks at Seattle University
    • 11:00AM-12:00PM (session 1) and 2:00PM-3:15PM (session 2)

    • Join us for Seattle U’s virtual Earth Day event: EARTH TALKS. Students, faculty, and community partners will present short 5-min talks about environmental justice and sustainability research, service and activism. Tune in live and bring your team, class, or club to this online celebration of Earth Day’s 50th anniversary which will include an interview with Earth Day co-founder Denis Hayes.   3. Happiness and Sustainability 24 Hour Webinar
    • Explore the UN Sustainable Development Goals through the lens of well-being and happiness during this around the clock 24-hour webinar event on Earth Day. Learn about solutions being developed in our region, engage with experts around the globe, and celebrate happiness and well-being with your fellow global citizens.

    • Explore how our lives might be better with less while watching this movie with us, exploring minimalism through the lives of minimalists from all walks of life — families, entrepreneurs, architects, artists, journalists, scientists, and even a former Wall Street broker — all of whom are striving to live a meaningful life with less.     • Join us to watch “Waterschool”, and movie about six girls living along the Amazon, Nile, Mississippi, Danube, Ganges, and Yangtze rivers who learn about water and sustainability and use their newfound education to protect their communities and homes.

  1. WAHESC Digital Earth Day Seminars: Taking Action for Climate Change Solutions

    • This set of seminars is hosted by the coalition of Washington Higher Education Institutions, to bring environmental and sustainability topics to focus on climate change to our entire state in celebration of Earth Day, and showing solidarity and sharing ideas across our state. Presentations have 10 minute windows (including Q&A). Folks are welcome to tune in for all seminars or just a few. Join us if and when you can
