During spring quarter 2009, Students 4 Sustainability worked with student leadership, the Student Fee Board, NSC’s administration, the Sustainability Committee, the student Sustainability Club, and other college faculty and staff to dedicate student fee funding to hire a Sustainability Coordinator at North. The Coordinator’s role is to integrate sustainability into all aspects of the College, working closely with students, administrators, faculty, and classified staff and to facilitate the work of the Sustainability Committee including taking leadership in communication with the college community and ensuring follow through on recommendations. The Coordinator reports jointly to the Vice President for Student Development and to the Director of the Student Administrative Council.

Having a dedicated sustainability coordinator working with and for students has allowed North Seattle College to begin to implement ideas for increasing sustainable practices across campus. For example, one of the major concerns on campus was waste within the food services facilities. Through a composting initiative on campus, students made signs and volunteered their time to separate compostable and non-compostable items to help educate other students and faculty. The College also switched the service ware in the dining facilities over to compostable service ware. As a result, composting and recycling practices were expanded campus-wide.
